July 14th & 21st 6-8pm, limited to 8 seats
Note: This workshop is for those with some prior wheel-throwing experience. You will be expected to center and pull 3″ or higher walls with minimal instructor intervention.
Come learn how to try new forms in week 1 and add a special touch with different styles of handles in week 2. Mug Mania will help you shape, trim, and personalize up to three unique mugs (all mug bodies must be thrown in the first week). Whether you’re brand new to pottery or looking to build your skills, you’ll get plenty of pro guidance in a fun, relaxed studio environment. Add your own creative touches with handles, textures, and select from our shop glazes to create mugs you’ll actually want to use every day. Grab a friend or come solo—either way, you’ll leave with new skills, great memories, and one-of-a-kind mugs made by you!

Instructor: Ava Arteaga
Tuesdays 6-8pm July 28th-Aug 18th, limited to 8 seats
Note: This workshop is for those with some prior wheel-throwing experience. You will be expected to center and pull 3″ or higher walls with minimal instructor intervention.
Over the 4 weeks, you’ll create a cohesive 4-piece matcha set, including a 2 chawan (tea bowls), whisk holder, and large pouring bowl. On week 4 you will glaze your pieces. We’ll focus on refining proportions, creating matching forms, and adding thoughtful details that make each piece both functional and beautiful. This workshop is ideal for intermediate to advanced throwers looking to expand their repertoire while crafting a set you’ll enjoy using for years to come. Come ready to challenge your skills, explore refined forms, and bring your own style to the ritual of matcha. Due to the specific nature of this course, there will not be any make-up sessions for missed weeks. Limited to 8 seats.
Kurinuki Hand-Carved Planters w/ Kris Erickson
Come learn from one of Pomona’s very own expert potters, Kris Erickson, as she takes you through a no-fail, one-of-a-kind project that gets its roots in Japan!
Discover the quiet magic of a Kurinuki-style clay workshop, where creativity begins with a simple block of clay and your own curiosity. In this beginner-friendly experience, you’ll carve and hollow your form rather than shape it on a wheel, making it perfect for first-time ceramic artists—no prior skills needed. Guided step-by-step, you’ll learn how to chisel, slice, scoop, and refine the clay at your own pace, turning a solid block into a beautifully organic planter, perfect for the organic forms of your garden. Then choose one of our shop glazes for the finishing touch.

Beginning/Intermediate Wheel Throwing
This is a casual, introductory wheel-throwing class for beginners or those with limited experience. Intermediate and Advanced classes require this as a prerequisite.
You will be provided expert instruction to learn the formative techniques to create cylinders that you can turn into mugs, bowls, cups and small vases. This is achieved through various techniques including centering, opening, and pulling. We will also cover the basics of trimming and glazing your piece(s) for the final firing. Pieces are ready for pickup after 2 weeks from when they are completed.
Clay & glazing is included in the tuition. No outside clay is permitted. Communal tools are provided or you may bring your own tools if desired. Studio expectations include cleanup of potter’s wheel, bucket and tools at the end of each class. Sign all work or it will be recycled.

Character Sculpting
Put down the cards and forget the video games, come “catch” your very OWN favorite cartoon characters as you gain basic handbuilding and sculpting techniques! This is a great option for families and groups of friends who want to learn how to sculpt in 3D other fun animals like Pokémon, Hello Kitty, Bluey, bunnies, dogs, dinos and more!
Participants will form their creature from scratch (approx 3″-5″ tall) with guided instruction and hands-on assistance if needed, however students are expected to do most of the work themselves. Once fired to bisque stage, you will return to glaze it yourself, ready in about 2 weeks.
Tuition is all-inclusive. If this class does not fill to our minimum, we will reschedule or credit the tuition.
Bring photos of whichever Character you hope to sculpt or use your phone as reference during the process.
Recommended beginner Pokémon for this session include:
Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Pikachu, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, Mew, Psyduck, Poliwag, Slowpoke, Eevee, Dratini, Gloom, Fuecoco, Smolive, & more! (Simple, round-shaped Pokémon are ideal for this beginner session). However, if you are up for a greater challenge, you may attempt a more complex creature of your choice. Bring photos of whichever Pokemon you hope to sculpt or use your phone as reference during the process.
